I recently saw this meme come through my Facebook feed. Perhaps you’ve seen it, too. This kind of attitude is something I find quite disturbing. I’ve seen many statistics speaking about how church attendance in America is dwindling, particularly in my age group and younger. There are a variety of reasons given for this trend. The reason with which I am most familiar is a lack of continuity when it comes to biblical authority. Claiming the Bible to be the infallible Word of God and then contradicting it when it comes to Genesis and the origins of the universe is an inconsistency that is readily seen, though the creation account is not the sole province of finding fault with Scripture. Anytime someone says that what the Bible says isn’t quite the way things happen, they are undermining the authority of Scripture and giving a reason to walk away from the faith. … Keep reading!
If you’ve read through the backlog of blog posts or know me personally, you know that I’ve struggled with lower back problems since December 2011. I’ve been incapacitated from a herniated disc between my L4 and L5 vertebrae to the point that I missed 4-5 weeks of work on two separate occasions, 3-4 consecutive days a couple of other times, and have dealt with chronic pain for at least a couple of years. I’d seen some marked improvement this summer, but am now about 5 weeks into a period of mild-to-moderate inconvenience where I’ve managed to get through an entire shift at work and then been more or less physically worthless the rest of the evening. It’s frustrating, to say the least. Lately I’ve been reading about Jesus as the Good Shepherd. I read Robert Wolgemuth’s Like The Shepherd, which calls husbands to shepherd their wives. It was solid enough, though … Keep reading!

What can they possibly say to us today? Not that we should read them to the exclusion of Scripture, or read only one or two and thus get a slanted interpretation of Scripture, but I find at least two points of value in reading the theology of men and women long gone. One, we get a picture of what Christians have believed throughout the centuries. Two, we also gain an understanding of the trials and false teaching the Church has faced throughout its history and come to realize that there truly is nothing new under the sun. This is not mean to be a slam on contemporary theologians. Stay tuned for my proposed “Read Old Dead Guys” campaign, possibly to kick off in May. We discuss Christian-based education and the commands God has given to Christian parents to train up their children. Excellent information for all parents! We also talk about spiritual hunger and spiritual substance within the church (and how children will absorb and even want more than what we give them credit for in terms of spiritual understanding); secular and Mennonite socialism, social justice, and Biblical economics in Canada; Israel has been to Canada, Mexico, Japan, and, most recently, Russia, speaking on homeschooling and the Bible in general; homeschooling is technically illegal in Japan, with an estimated 5,000 families homeschooling under the radar, and the Japanese parliament has a bill in consideration that would make Japan the second-most restrictive country in terms of homeschooling; the spiritual hunger is … Keep reading!

We discuss Christian-based education and the commands God has given to Christian parents to train up their children. Excellent information for all parents! We also talk about how the average cost for homeschooling is $900/student/year compared to $12,000/student/year for government schools; students typically spend 15 hours/day in school and media consumption while parents spend 19 minutes/day with their kids yet can often find hours to spend on TV and hobbies; the reason why classroom sizes are typically about 25-30 students and herd mentality; and do you know who is teaching/caring for your children at church? http://media.blubrry.com/bite_sized_theology/p/jwexperience.com/podcast/Episode00014-InterviewwithIsraelWaynePart1.mp3Podcast: Play in new window | DownloadSubscribe: Android | RSSI had the opportunity to meet Israel Wayne in September 2010 when my then-fiancée-now-wife was standing up in a friend’s wedding, where the groom was the brother of Israel’s wife. Got that straight? If you’ve figured it out, would you let me know? Anyway, I’ve had some online interactions with Israel in the time since, but nothing major, although I had read a couple of his books and heard his podcast. So it was a major thrill when he was not only able to come and speak in Des Moines but also granted me the chance to sit down for an hour (that stretched into 2 1/2 hours of recording time and at least 30 minutes of chatting before and after the mic was on) and share some of his experiences and insights into homeschooling, Christian living, marriage, and a global … Keep reading!
