The Ice Bucket Challenge

Sometimes I feel like I am about nothing more than beating a dead horse. Of course, if the horse was dead, maybe I would not have to beat it in the first place. At any rate, this is not going to make me any more popular than my previous post. Popping up all over Facebook and other Internet sources lately is the Ice Bucket Challenge to raise awareness/funds for ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, otherwise known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease) research. To read a great post on this issue, (which I will hopefully not overly duplicate in the rambling below) click HERE. The author recommends another society that deals with a variety of neurological diseases, and I have not yet been able to look into this organization to say if I could or could not support them. And please, do not misunderstand me: ALS is a terrible disease, and I have … Keep reading!

To be burned at the stake…

This is one of those posts that is going to get me in trouble, assuming anyone bothers to read it (sometimes it’s nice to be virtually unknown). But with the way things are going in our country, I thought I would add my two-cents’ worth. I read this article today: Government to Farmers: Host Same-Sex Wedding or Pay a $13,000 Fine. We’re going to see more and more of this taking place. Why? Because the world hates God and anyone who takes a stand on His Word. Are you a Christian? Then you had better be prepared to give an answer as to what you believe and to endure the onslaught of fury you will bring down upon yourself if your answer comes out of Scripture. I will come right out and admit it. I agree with the Bible when it says that homosexuality is a sin. Maybe that offends you. … Keep reading!

Not an idle commitment…

Monday night, I started reading the book God’s Smuggler before going to bed. I got three chapters into it before turning out the lights around 1:30 AM. Then I lay in bed unable to sleep and finally trekked downstairs at 2:30 AM, book in hand. I read through the 17th chapter before returning to bed at 5 AM, where I lay awake praying for probably another half-hour. When I woke up Tuesday morning, after about 4 hours of sleep, I finished the last four chapters. The book, in all, is 240 pages and reads very quickly. I had never heard of Brother Andrew, the author and subject of the story, before opening this book. Born in Holland, he spent the first 20-odd years of his life running from God. He eventually answered the call on his heart and began an incredible journey of faith and service. Sure that God had called … Keep reading!

Speak clearly…

Have you ever said you would do something and then didn’t do it? Or have you had someone do so to you? If you’ve ever been on the receiving end of this type of behavior, you know it’s quite frustrating. There are times when such activity merely creates inconvenience, but sometimes there can be devastating consequences. Matthew 5:37 and James 5:12 repeat the idea that we should speak plainly and let our word be our bond. In the context of both verses, the topic is about not taking oaths (the Jews were notorious for taking oaths that didn’t really mean anything), but I think we can make a general principle of saying what we mean and meaning what we say. We are constantly put into situations where we make commitments to do something or other. Maybe you work in a gas station or grocery store and you’ve agreed to set … Keep reading!
